Cars emit less CO2

The level by which car concerns reduced carbon dioxide emission in new models of cars surprised everyone. It turns out that the limits set by the EU are, after all, achievable.

When the European Union announced emission limits for 2020 in the amount of 95g/km, car manufacturers considered them as impracticable. They warned that such restrictions will limit the development of the industry and call into question the competitiveness of the European automotive industry. Car producers managed to postpone the 130g/km emission guidelines from 2013 to 2015, explaining this as a concern for the wallets of customers who could not afford to too technologically advanced cars.

However, the reality surprised everyone. In Brussels report of the "Transport and environment" association was published. According to it, average emission of carbon dioxide by the leaders of ecology, Fiat and Toyota, was 131g/km and 132g/km respectively. Other brands such as Peugeot-Citroen came off a little bit worse reaching 136g/km and 153g/km - Volkswagen. For the defenders of the environment it is an argument for the fact that ecological directives are not too strict. In the case of the ongoing legislative work related to the emission limits for delivery trucks "greens" recommend even more rigorous restrictions.

Last year, car producers reported 5.1 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emission. Large impact on this fact had financial crisis, which forced many people to choose smaller, more economical cars. Also subsidy programs, helping to buy a new vehicle, introduced by some governments played an important role. Thanks to those programs large part of the car industry could be renewed.
